I feel like those little lines around the mouth area need to be closer to the mouth. You've drawn them way out on his cheeks.

But otherwise, nice, and I actually like the background, makes him seem like a trippy hippy =P

What kukanani said, and it'd make more sense if there was a wall and floor... Right now, he looks totally off-balance, but maybe he's leaning on a wall. And yeah, the background totally makes him look groovy man...

Kukanani, I'll move 'em closer. I drew them farther off because it's a simple face, and I didn't want all the features squished all in one spot.

Mene-Mene, it totally would. Maybe I'll try making a background scene after school today.

Do you have a graphics tablet, mightybotme? It seems to me that your pencil art has a lot more life and detail to it than your digital stuff (or are the pencil sketches not originals?) Having a tablet might help your digital stuff. It really has helped me.

Yeah! I received a medium Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet (that's with a pen AND a mouse) for Christmas two years ago. It's really neat, I'll admit!

But I don't use it much to draw with. All of the illustrations in this thread were drawn with my own hand, then scanned into Photoshop for coloring. I use the pen on my Wacom tablet to make inking corrections, and of course, add the colors. The pen really makes it feel like a real brush when I'm coloring!

And yes, I used a reference picture for the sketches. Pretty soon I'll be ready to try some original sketches, instead of copying what I see from other artists. Still in the learning stage, yes sir.

The shading make it appear flat. I'd get a little more bold with the shading; it needs more contrast.

Also remember when doing your shading, sometimes it will be a hue shift and not just a value shift.

^^ I second IrishCream, watch for hue shifts. It's possible to make a good-looking cloud using only yellow and purple crayons (same value, different hue).

In fact, since the sun's light is slightly yellow, outdoor shadows are all slightly blue-purple. Keep that in mind.

Good call, guys. Maybe I'll go for some pale, desaturated flats to start with and really let the brushes fly with shading/lighting on my next drawing.

I finished an illustration tonight, actually. But you can't see it 'cuz it's going on my future portfolio. And it still needs a little work; especially in the background. Tough luck for you!

Also, keep in mind the luster of the surface. Where light first hits Lustrous surfaces it's going to be nearly white.

I'm a little late getting this up, but hey! Merry Christmas! Have a desktop background.

The inks are a little sloppy, but I'd say I did OK with the coloring this time, quick a job it was.

Quick character design sketch I made for a comic book I'm starting. I know, those hands in the second one aren't too rad. Don't tell me.

I like your new character, he's an improvement over your previous work (in my opinion).

There's still some flaws, IMO, but it's also workable and his pose makes it easier to point out those mistakes. I think the biggest problem here is consistency, between the right and left side of the character. So I did a quick critique for you to see (but I excluded the hands on the right pic being that you are already unsatisfied with them).

I hope that helps!

Thanks for the time, Lava!

I'll have to admit, the reason why my consistency = zilch is because I just don't draw enough. But I'm getting back into it; it's been a looong Christmas break.
You probably could have said something about EVERY part of this drawing. And it would've been true. I'll take note about what you said and try to get it better in the re-sketch, which may or may not get posted here.

Edit:
Oh yeah, I meant to put this on here too. Here's a side-by-side comparison of the pencilled drawing and the inked final one. My pencils are sloppy, but it looks my poor inking skills might be the problem. Or I could've pencilled it again. Or I could have just pencilled it better. Or I could just kept quiet on my stupid topic so I'm not posting every flippin' thing I create. Yes, I'll go with that. Okay, the pics:

Drew this from scratch, without any reference picture. I liked it better before I inked it :P
